Behind-the-Scenes: From Fear to Series

Embarking on the journey of writing Embracing Calla was like stepping into uncharted waters. Initially, my ambition was to craft an erotic manuscript that would captivate and tantalize. I dove headfirst into research, absorbing every piece of information on the anatomy of a successful novel. However, the realization that a typical romance novel hovers around the 80,000-word mark was daunting. Echoing in my mind as I stared at the blinking cursor on my blank Google Docs page was, “How the hell am I going to write 80,000 words?” The number seemed astronomical, an insurmountable peak I was unsure I could scale.

The process of writing, however, unfolded most unexpectedly. About a week into my writing endeavor, a switch flipped. Words began to pour out of me with a fervor I hadn’t anticipated. Before I knew it, my manuscript had ballooned to over 400,000 words.  That’s when I created a series and not a standalone novel.

The first draft:

I declared the first draft complete. Originally named Calla: The Unexpected Touch it had grown into a behemoth of 295,912 words. Despite this achievement, the fear of judgment loomed large. My lack of formal education in writing gnawed at me, feeding my apprehension about sending my work to an editor. The thought of someone dismissing my manuscript as unworthy was paralyzing. Yet, I knew I had to move forward. The story that had unfolded deserved to be told, and I couldn’t let my insecurities stand in the way.

I finally mustered the courage to send my manuscript to an editor. The feedback was so profound and encouraging that I immortalized it on a plaque, a constant reminder of my potential and the journey ahead. This pivotal moment taught me an invaluable lesson: I am capable of doing hard things.

Written on the plaque:

“I was particularly impressed with the progression of their sexual relationship. Your love scenes are truly incredibly well written (these are always a little awkward to critique, but honestly, yours are fantastic). But what’s really great is that we also get to watch them learn to trust each other a little more each time. It’s for that reason that I actually did not suggest cutting any love scenes at all, even though that would be an easy place to cut your word count a bit.”

Through the editing process, Embracing Calla underwent a metamorphosis. Beginning as an erotica novel evolved into a profound love story. With tantalizing scenes of passion that were not only teasing but deeply realistic and heartfelt. The initial draft and the final product are worlds apart, a testament to the growth and development that can occur through the creative process.

Reflecting on this journey:

I am awestruck by the transformation that took place, not just in my manuscript but within myself. Writing Embracing Calla challenged me in ways I never expected, pushing me to confront my fears and surpass my own limitations. This experience has been a reminder that the path to achieving our dreams is often fraught with obstacles and self-doubt. Still, it is also filled with growth, discovery, and the realization of our true capabilities.

Conclusion:

Embrace the journey, trust in your abilities, and remember that the act of creation is an odyssey of its own, replete with lessons, triumphs, and the power to inspire. Embracing Calla is no longer just a manuscript; it’s a symbol of my resilience, my passion, and the boundless possibilities that lie within us all.
